Actor/director Mel Gibson confirmed that the next installment in the long-dormant Lethal Weapon movie franchise is still in the works from original director Richard Donner.
Gibson appeared Friday on Good Morning America, promoting his new film Fatman with co-star Chance Hurstfield.
“Yeah!” Gibson said, when GMA host Michael Strahan asked if Lethal Weapon 5 is still coming. “No, absolutely. And the man who was behind all that, the man who brought it to the screen and gave it its, the goodies, is working on it right now: Richard Donner. He’s a legend.”
Gibson co-starred in four Lethal Weapon films from 1987 to 1998. He played Martin Riggs, a reckless Los Angeles Police narcotics detective paired with Danny Glover as Roger Murtaugh, a senior homicide detective-sergeant on the cusp of retirement and unwilling to take chances. Over the four films, Riggs and Murtaugh frequently found themselves dealing with international criminals and elaborate schemes that called for lots of mayhem and gunplay. All four films were directed by Donner, who also directed The Goonies and Superman, and executive produced X-Men and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Lethal Weapon was adapted as a TV series on Fox from 2016 to 2019, starring Damon Wayans as Murtaugh and Clayne Crawford as Riggs. Crawford was fired before Season 3 began and was replaced by Seann William Scott as Wesley Cole, a former CIA field officer who joins the LAPD.
