A port city in the Netherlands has agreed to dismantle a historic bridge to make room for Jeff Bezos‘ new superyacht to sail by, and the locals are not too happy about it.
The Amazon founder is having his $485 million luxury boat built at a Dutch shipyard and he wants to sail it through the city of Rotterdam. But to do so, it would have to get by the Koningshaven Bridge, which has been there since 1878 and just isn’t high enough. So the city will dismantle the middle section of it to allow Bezos to sail by, and then put it right back together. Bezos is footing the bill for the construction and the project will also create several new jobs, but local residents are upset about taking apart an important piece of the city’s industrial heritage. When the bridge went through a renovation in 2017, the city council promised to never dismantle it again — but money talks. (BBC)
