Tessa Thompson was joined by Nnamdi Asomugha when it came presenting duties at the 2020 Soul Train Awards, which saw performances from R&B icons Monica and Brandy – not together – on Sunday (November 29).
If you’ve been a regular reader of this site, you will know that Tessa Thompson was the first to bring Christopher John Rogers into spotlight, and since then the designer has earned a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award.
The designer has made voluminous silhouettes, sharp tailoring and unabashed use of colour his trademark.
On this occasion it was all about volume.
I honestly didn’t see this two-piece as a red carpet look. Mostly because of the colour and the fact that there is a hell of a lot to contend with, but Tessa Thompson made me fall in love.
In this moment you can see that she loves and understands fashion.
On the red carpet this might have been tricky to bring to life for most, but in this pose (which looks like it required one deep breath), she embodies everything I feel that Christopher John Rogers was trying to portray: old-school glamour, the modern way.
It’s as simple as that.
What makes this even more impressive is that Tessa is petite at 5ft 4 (1.62m), yet she is fully in command of this look, and it does not overwhelm her.
