Anchor Piers Morgan is leaving the show “Good Morning Britain,” multiple outlets reported, after storming off set Tuesday when his co-presenter Alex Beresford called him out for repeatedly attacking Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
The heated debate followed a tell-all interview between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Oprah Winfrey that aired Sunday in the U.S. and Monday in the UK. The interview marked the first time the couple has spoken out together since announcing last year they would be stepping back as senior members of the Royal Family and moving to California.
Morgan tweeted Monday that he doesn’t “believe that anyone at the Palace would have refused to help her if she told them she felt suicidal,” referencing Meghan opening up about experiencing a mental health crisis as a royal. Morgan also called the interview a “disgraceful betrayal of the Queen and the Royal Family.”
“I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle. You’ve made that so clear a number of times on this program,” Beresford said to Morgan on Tuesday. Beresford mentioned that Markle severed a previous personal relationship with Morgan, which he reportedly previously blamed on her dating Harry, but that Morgan continues “to trash her.”
“Ok, I’m done with this,” Morgan said, as he stood up to leave the show’s set. “Sorry. No. Sorry. You can trash me mate, but not on my own show.”
“This is absolutely diabolical behavior,” Beresford responded as Morgan walked off. “I’m sorry, but Piers spouts off on a regular basis, and we all have to sit there and listen.”
According to a report from Reuters on Tuesday, executives at ITV — the network that airs Good Morning Britain — had spoken with Morgan about his continued criticism of Meghan. Also Tuesday, Buckingham Palace released a statement, under mounting pressure, that the “whole family is saddened” by Meghan and Harry’s account and the issues of racism “are concerning” and will be addressed by the family privately.
During Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview, Meghan alleged a member of the royal family was concerned with the skin color of their child, Archie. She also opened up about experiencing a mental health crisis and the lack of support from Buckingham Palace. The couple also spoke about the racist coverage and constant harassment of Meghan in the British tabloids.
After storming off set on Tuesday, Morgan returned following a commercial break and said Beresford was starting a “pretty personally derogatory monologue” against him.
“As much as I’d like to sit here taking abuse from you for hours on end, that’s not going to happen,” Morgan said.
Beresford said he was “tired of finding a different way” to explain why Meghan’s accusations of racism are “so wrong.” He also added that it’s “personal” to him.
“I’ve walked into institutions as the only person of color and experienced covert and overt racism on so many occasions, and why the Meghan interview really resonates with me is because an ex-work colleague — not on this show — asked me if I was worried about the shade of cocoa that my son was going to come out,” Beresford continued. “So I fully understand the hurt that is behind all of that.”
On Monday, Morgan got into an argument on the show with activist Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu who called him “such a disappointment” after he said Harry and Meghan were “spray-gunning” the royal family.
“You constantly use your platform as a wealthy, white privileged man with power and influence,” Mos-Shogbamimu said before being interrupted by Morgan.
“What a load of race-baiting nonsense,” he said.
“You want to deny the Royal Family has any racist undertones or actions… simply because you’re in love with the Queen?” Mos-Shogbamimu said.
