LIONEL RICHIE: Last-Minute MSG Cancelation

Lionel Richie angered fans with an 11th-hour cancelation of his sold-out Madison Square Garden show.

Earth, Wind & Fire opened the “sing along” concert at 7:30. Lionel Richie tweeted at 8:31 Saturday night (quote) “Due to severe weather and being unable to land in the New York and surrounding areas, I’m unable to make it to the show tonight. We are rescheduling the show to Monday, August 14th.” (Deadline)

This didn’t sit well with the 20,000 fans who traveled for a special weekend in New York City. Arranging to stay an additional two nights was simply not a possibility. The New York Post quoted several fans:

A pediatric nurse said (quote) “Does he think it’s easy for us to take off Monday night? We work.”

Another couple said a weather excuse my have made sense in winter or for an outdoor show. But this was August inside Madison Square Garden. Wholly unprofessional of Lionel Richie to miss this engagement.

A former fan complained how Lionel Richie ruined her birthday (quote) “After spending $1000 on VIP tickets. We also spent $500 on a hotel and several hundred dollars for meals. What a huge bummer!!! Ugh.”
