Keanu Reeves does not think that The Matrix Resurrections will spawn another trilogy. While many had suspected that the long, long-awaited sequel to the original Matrix trilogy would reignite the franchise and begin another series of movies, Reeves, who returns as Neo in The Matrix Resurrections, does not believe that this will be the case.
“I don’t believe so. If I had to cast a ballot- No, not a ballot, a vote. I would say that Lana would not do another Matrix.”
Speaking with Empire Magazine, the beloved actor admitted that there will not be any further follow-ups after The Matrix Resurrections, with Reeves feeling that director Lana Wachowski is now finished with the franchise she started alongside her sibling Lilly way back in 1999. Reeves’ co-star Carrie-Anne Moss, who also returns to The Matrix in The Matrix Resurrections as Trinity, has other ideas saying, “We thought that about this one too.”
Moss is of course absolutely right. Nobody expected a fourth Matrix movie to appear all these years later, and so, much like the surprise development of The Matrix Resurrections, there is no reason why a fifth outing could not suddenly materialize. With or without Lana Wachowski at the helm.
While he asserts his belief that Lana Wachowski is now finished with The Matrix, Keanu Reeves did go on to state that, should she come back for more, he would leap back in, no questions asked. “If she invites us again- I’m sorry, I spoke for you again!” he added. “If she invites me again, I’m in.”
This is not the first time that Keanu Reeves has discussed the possibility of The Matrix 5, with the actor previously declaring that, so long as Lana Wachowski is involved, he would love to reprise the role of Neo all over again. “That’s a Lana Wachowski question,” Reeves said when asked whether they would all be plugging back in for a fifth Matrix foray. “I mean, if she wanted to do another story and wanted to include me I would be honored and grateful, and I’d like to see what happens to Trinity and Neo, and the world.”
Much like its predecessors Reloaded and Revolutions, The Matrix Resurrections has proven to be divisive amongst both critics and audiences, as well as underperforming at the box office. This lackluster response could of course halt any potential plans for The Matrix 5, regardless of whether the cast and crew would be willing to return.
For now, audiences can once again tumble down the rabbit hole in The Matrix Resurrections, which finds Keanu Reeves’ Neo living a seemingly ordinary life as Thomas A. Anderson. While his therapist prescribes him blue pills in order to dampen his destiny as The One, a chance meeting with Trinity will once again reawaken Neo’s mind to reality. Much like the trilogy before it, it is this relationship between Neo and Trinity that will take center stage, with Reeves having previously called The Matrix Resurrections a “love story.”
Produced, co-written, and directed by Lana Wachowski, The Matrix Resurrections stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lambert Wilson, Daniel Bernhardt, Eréndira Ibarra, Christina Ricci, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Telma Hopkins, Max Riemelt, Toby Onwumere, Brian J. Smith, Andrew Caldwell, and Ellen Hollman.
