Critics have been brutal in reviewing Katy Perry’s first album in four years. Ten of the 11 tracks on 143 were produced by Dr. Luke. He failed to recapture the magic displayed on her Teenage Dream album from 15 years ago.

Here’s a taste of the reviews which led Metacritic — a site that collects and averages review ratings — to declare Kary Perry’s 143 is the worst-reviewed album by a female artist.

Steven J. Horowitz said (quote) “Perry sounds disaffected and removed, as if she’d just punched in between American Idol tapings.”

The Washington Post wrote (quote) “Half of the 33-minute album belongs at a retro DJ night.”

Music journalist Amy Davidson said pop fans have left Katy behind (quote) “Olivia Rodrigo to Sabrina Carpenter are making music in 2024 that is fun, flirty, feminist and interesting. Two of the most talked-about artists, Charli XCX and Chappell Roan, have are writing songs with scorching authenticity” (BBC)
